Bopparder Hamm
One hillside. Different vineyard sites. Different soils. Distinctive characters.
This diversity is what makes the Bopparder Hamm so fascinating to us.
Covering approximately 75 hectares, the Bopparder Hamm is the largest contiguous vineyard area in the Middle Rhine (Mittelrhein) wine region and the home of our wines. At the Rhine’s largest bend, the steep vineyards rise directly above the river like a natural amphitheatre – a spectacular interplay of the Rhine, slate soils and extreme slopes.
Following the sweeping curve of the river, the vineyards face southeast, south and southwest, creating different levels of sun exposure and distinct microclimates throughout the Bopparder Hamm. While some plots benefit from the early morning sun, others enjoy sunshine well into the evening.
The Rhine itself plays a crucial role. Its vast surface acts as a natural heat reservoir, helping to moderate temperatures. Together with the heat-retaining slate soils, it creates ideal conditions for the slow, even ripening of the grapes.
Due to its size and geographical significance, the Bopparder Hamm is recognised as a district of the town of Boppard, allowing wines bearing the name Bopparder Hamm to be classified as VDP.ORTSWEIN (village-level wines). The Bopparder Hamm is divided into five individual vineyard sites, and our vineyards extend across all five. Four of these sites are classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, the highest vineyard classification within the VDP’s origin-based quality hierarchy, recognising sites with exceptional potential to produce wines of outstanding quality.
Engelstein
Engelstein is one of the sunniest vineyard sites in the Bopparder Hamm. Its southwest-facing slopes receive sunshine well into the evening, creating a particularly warm microclimate.
A distinctive feature lies beneath the surface: alongside slate, the vine roots penetrate layers of pumice originating from volcanic activity in the Eifel region. This combination of warmth and unique soil composition produces Rieslings with intense, sweet-toned exotic fruit aromas, delicate spice and a beautifully gentle acidity.
Ohlenberg
Ohlenberg is situated in the eastern part of the Bopparder Hamm and is characterised by its particularly warm microclimate. One remarkable inhabitant of this sun-drenched landscape is the European green lizard, which thrives in these favourable conditions.
The south-facing slopes, the Rhine’s moderating influence on temperatures and the heat-retaining slate soils encourage even grape ripening. Quartzite and stony Devonian slate shape the underlying geology. Rieslings from Ohlenberg are typically juicy, fruit-driven and vibrant, with an expressive character.
Feuerlay
Located in the heart of the Bopparder Hamm, Feuerlay was first documented in 1605. Its sun-exposed, warm and stony vineyards are characterised by relatively deep, fine-textured, slightly calcareous clay slate soils.
Their excellent water-retention capacity is particularly valuable during warm and dry growing seasons. The interplay of warmth, slate and soil structure gives Feuerlay Rieslings their distinctive combination of richness and finesse, alongside complex, ripe fruit and spicy notes.
Mandelstein
Mandelstein is a south-southeast-facing slate vineyard site and home to some of our steepest vineyards. Gradients of up to 70% make cultivating these slopes particularly demanding.
The vines are rooted in finely weathered Devonian slate with characteristic almond-shaped inclusions. Intense sunshine, dry slate soils and deep-reaching roots create exceptional conditions for Riesling. Wines from Mandelstein are distinguished by pronounced minerality, depth and outstanding ageing potential.
