Bopparder Hamm
With around 75 hectares, Bopparder Hamm is the largest contiguous vineyard area on the Middle Rhine. Thanks to its size, Bopparder Hamm enjoys the status of an urban district of Boppard, which is why our wines with the designation Bopparder Hamm are VDP Ortswein (village wine).
With its large water surface, the Rhine acts as a heat reservoir and mitigates frost. The southern exposure of the hill provides the vines with sunshine until late in the evening and enables an ideal ripening process, especially for our Riesling grapes.
The entire Bopparder Hamm is further subdivided into vineyards, which differ from one another due to their aspect and soil composition and therefore also produce wines of different character.
Our vineyards are located in the single vineyard sites Engelstein, An der Rabenlei, Ohlenberg, Feuerlay and Mandelstein, all of which are classified as Große Lage by the VDP. This classification is awarded to vineyards in Germany that have the greatest possible potential to produce wines of utmost quality.
Engelstein
The southern exposure of the Engelstein site is responsible for sunshine until late in the evening and therefore produces the most sun-kissed grapes.
The vine roots here do not only grow through the slate soil, but also through layers of pumice stone from the Eifel volcanism. The wines from this site are noticeably characterized by intensely fruity and spicy aromas.
Ohlenberg
The second-easternmost part of the Bopparder Hamm is the Ohlenberg site. An indicator of the particularly warm microclimate there is the largest occurrence of the emerald lizard north of the Alps.
Optimum ripening of the grapes is guaranteed by the southern exposure of this site, the Rhine as a temperature regulator, and the slate that acts as a heat reservoir. This, in combination with quartzite rock on stony Devonian slate, are the prerequisites for yielding juicy, very fruity and spirited wines from the Ohlenberg.
Feuerlay
The Feuerlay vineyard, first mentioned in 1605, is centrally located in the Bopparder Hamm. The grapes for wines from this site are harvested in the sun-exposed, hot and stony vineyards of the Bopparder Hamm. The Feuerlay site has a very deep, somewhat calcareous soil rich in fine earth. The associated water storage capacity is the ideal basis for the opulence and refinement of the Feuerlay wines, which have a complex and ripe bouquet as well as spicy aromas.
Mandelstein
The Mandelstein is a south-southeast facing slate site. The vines here grow on special, finely weathered Devonian slate with almond-shaped inclusions. Many of our steepest parcels can be found there, with a gradient of up to 70%. The combination of highly intensive sunlight, deep roots and dry slate soils is unique and certainly responsible for the fact that the Rieslings from this site are particularly mineral and long-lived.
